Linux shared hosting — good for small business?

    VPS Hosting
Is Linux shared hosting good enough for running small business websites with decent traffic?

Yes, totally. I’ve been running a portfolio site and a small online store on Linux shared hosting for over a year. It handles daily traffic (100–200 visitors) without any slowdown. As long as you don’t expect huge traffic spikes, it works fine.

Agree with @Annie_P. I host a blog and appointment booking system for a small local business on a shared server. It's reliable and affordable. The only thing I did early on was use a lightweight theme to keep things well.

I’d say it depends on the provider. Some Linux shared hosting plans come with resource limits (like CPU usage or RAM caps). If you hit those, your site can slow down. Make sure the host is transparent about those limits.

Exactly. I started with a Linux shared plan for my local business. It worked well for about 1,000 visits/day. But once I hit sudden peaks, the site's speed dropped due to “bad neighbor” issues—another site on the same server hogged resources.

I solved this by enabling caching and optimizing images to reduce load.

Appreciate you pointing that out. The "bad neighbor" scenario can occasionally show up in shared hosting environments. For anyone curious, we’ve covered the topic in more detail here:

Bad Neighbor Effect in Shared Hosting

It's helpful to know what to look out for and how to manage it if it ever becomes a concern.

Don’t forget monitoring and backups. I set up uptime monitoring (UptimeRobot) and daily backups. If anything goes wrong, I can revert quickly. Helps with performance dips or security incidents.

@Marc_AccuWebHosting, thanks for sharing the article on the bad neighbor effect. It really helped me understand what was going on with my site. Appreciate the tips!

It really depends on the specific needs of your business, but in most cases, Linux shared hosting is perfectly fine for small business websites — especially if we're talking about informational sites, blogs, or even small e-commerce stores with moderate traffic.
