ICANN – Upcoming Domain Transfer Policy Changes

On 1st June 2016, (ICANN) Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers made an official announcement for upcoming domain name transfer policy changes for all gTLDs (non-country code domains).

For those curious, ICANN is a nonprofit organization that governs an IP address space allocation, domain name system management and root server system management. This policy changes will get into affect 1st December, 2016.

Domain Transfer Policy Change Between Registrars

To avert the risk of domain frauds and domain hijacking activities, ICANN has introduced several changes in Inter-Registrar Transfer Policy (IRTP). As per the new policy, domain name registrants are required to take some additional steps in order to confirm a domain transfer.

Similarly, when a domain registrant makes any routine changes to domain contact information, following policy changes will come into effect.

  1. When a domain registrant of gTLD makes any change in domain contact information (first name, last name, or email address), both current registrant and the new registrant must confirm the change. This policy applies even if losing and gaining registrant are actually the same person or entity.
  2. Both registrants will also receive notification regarding pending changes, and they will have ability to decline them.
  3. Once the changes are confirmed, the domain name cannot be transferred to a new registrar for 60 days. ICANN allows current registrants to opt-out from this 60-day transfer-lock period, but approval of changes for both parties is mandatory.
  4. If current or new registrant declines the changes, or they fail to confirm the change within a certain time period (decided by the Registrar), then the domain transfer/information changes will be canceled.

How This Policy Changes Affect End Users?

  1. Each time user changes the first name, last name, or email address for a gTLD domain, both losing and gaining registrant will receive an email to confirm the change. In case, the change isn’t confirmed within certain period of time, the name or an email address will stay the same.
  2. While transferring the domain name, both losing and gaining registrant will have to confirm the change. In case, the change isn’t confirmed within certain period of time, domain transfer will be canceled.
  3. When user changes the first name, last name, or an email address for a gTLD domain, domain will be locked at same registrar for the next 60 days.

How This Policy Changes Affect Resellers?

  1. AccuWebHosting domain resellers should inform their customers about this upcoming policy changes.
  2. We will re-code our API to implement the new policy changes, for those resellers who have been using our API or platform. Resellers may also notice some changes in UI of reseller panel.

These changes have significant impact over thousands of end users and registrars, and we’re working hard to ensure that new policy gets implemented without affecting the stability and security of the platform. We will keep you informed with further updates, meanwhile keep visiting our blog for further developments.
