What’s your process for updating WordPress on a live website?

    VPS Hosting
I’m worried about downtime when updating WordPress on live sites. How do you handle updates safely?

I never update directly on production anymore. My process is:
    1. Clone the site to a staging environment
    2. Run all core, plugin, and theme updates there
    3. Check forms, checkout, and key pages
    4. Push changes to live during low-traffic hours

It takes a bit more time, but I haven’t had a downtime issue in years.

Managed WordPress hosting helps a lot here. My host handles core updates automatically and creates restore points. I still manually update plugins, but knowing I can roll back in one click removes most of the risk.

One thing people forget about database changes. Some plugin updates modify the database, so I always:
        • Backup files and database
        • Check error logs after updating
Catching errors early prevents silent issues.

I schedule updates during the lowest traffic window (usually late night or early morning). Even if something goes wrong, fewer users are affected, and fixes are less stressful.
