Debian made its debut as an open-source and freely available operating system in 1993. Being one of the older Linux distributions, it is preferred by numerous Linux admin users, making it the most stable Linux distribution.

Debian is commonly recognized as the "Mother of all distributions" Because Ubuntu is based on Debian, and there are hundreds of distributions that are based on Ubuntu.

Ubuntu, a recent addition to the Linux market, Its initial release, known as version 4.10 (Warty Warthog), took place in October 2004. It is built upon the foundation of the Debian distribution. It is accessible to all users as an open-source and freely available operating system.

Ubuntu is subsequently released in three different versions:
    • Desktop – a desktop version.
    • Server – a server version.
    • Core – an IoT-specific version.
Debian and Ubuntu stand out as two of the most widely used Linux distributions in the market. Though Ubuntu is based on Debian they still have the below-mentioned differences:

Stability: Debian is renowned for its stability, while Ubuntu may not match the same level of stability as Debian.

Desktop Environment: By default, Debian does not include a specific desktop environment. However, it offers a diverse range of desktop environments to choose from, catering to various preferences and needs. These options span from minimalistic setups to fully-featured environments.

Ubuntu's default desktop environment (DE) is GNOME Shell. Different editions of Ubuntu come with their unique desktop environments.

Developers and community: Developed by the Debian Community. Ubuntu was developed by the Canonical Company.

Efficiency: Debian is Ultralight and quick. Whereas Ubuntu is slower than Debian, its performance is still excellent.

Support Platforms: Available on multiple platforms while Ubuntu is accessible on x86 and ARM 64-bit platforms.

Installation: Debian requires user intervention and manual configuration whereas The Ubuntu installation process is straightforward through default settings and available software.

Base OS: Debian-Original Linux Ubuntu-Debian based

Software Type: Debian-Free Ubuntu-Free and proprietary.

Debian does not support PPA while Ubuntu supports PPA.

Debian is suitable for users with higher skill levels whereas Ubuntu is suitable for beginners.

Release Cycle: Debian does not have a fixed and specific release cycle; it consists of stable, experimental, and unstable branches While Ubuntu has a 2-year release cycle and has two branches, LTS and Regular.

To choose Debian or Ubuntu: the decision-making process can be simplified into two options: Do you prioritize stability over newer applications and some simplicity, or do you prioritize user-friendliness?

If you seek a remarkably stable operating system, Debian is the ideal choice. On the other hand, if you prioritize unparalleled hardware detection and ease of use, Ubuntu stands out as the preferred option.

Both Debian and Ubuntu are great operating systems, and the choice between them depends on your specific needs and requirements for your activities and business.
