What is the Difference Between IPv4 & IPv6?

IPv4 IPv6
IPv4 is a 32-bit address & is the fourth version of the IP address. An IPv6 consists of 128 bits and is the latest.
Approx 4 billion IP addresses are there in IPv4. There are 320 undecillion addresses in IPv6.
IPv4 address is numeric and separated by a period (.). IPv6 address is an alphanumeric octet separated by a colon (:).
IPv4 does not provide encryption or authentication services. IPv6 provides Encryption and authentication.
The IPv4 protocol follows the routing protocol (RIP) and is preferred over the IPv6 protocol. To function, IPv6 relies on static routes.
IPv4 security measures are not mandatory; they depend on the applications used. At different levels, IPv6 provides Internet Protocol Security (IPSec).

Different types of IP Addresses

IP Addresses can be classified into the following types:

  • Public: Your router's public IP address is assigned by a network provider & is publicly available.
  • Static: A static IP address does not change. It is a permanent internet address that DNS servers use. It gives information about the device location and Internet Service Provider. Once we get the ISP, we can locate the device connected to the Internet. Static IPs are less secure than dynamic IPs as they are easy to track.
  • Dynamic: Your Internet Service Provider assigns you an IP address from the available IP addresses when you connect a device to the Internet. Now that your device has an IP address, you can send and receive data from it over the Internet. Your provider will assign you a different IP address the next time you try to connect to the Internet with the same device. Because IP addresses change every time, it is known as a Dynamic IP address.
  • Website IP addresses: It is an IP address for website owners who don't host their websites on their servers but do so through a hosting company.
    1. Shared: A shared IP address is commonly used by different websites & mostly by small businesses that use managed hosting services.
    2. Dedicated: An IP address allotted to one company or an individual is used only by that company or an individual. An individual or a company gets certain benefits, such as using private Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificates. A website is accessed or logged into via File Transfer Protocol (FTP) by IP address instead of its domain name, which increases performance when traffic is high. It also protects from an IP address that is black-listed due to spam.
