    Hot-swapping in RAID refers to the ability to replace a failed hard drive without shutting down the system. This feature is critical for maintaining uptime and ensuring data availability, especially in enterprise environments.

    Here’s how it works:
    1. RAID Controller Support: The RAID controller must support hot-swapping, meaning it can detect a removed or newly inserted drive without disrupting operations.
    2. Drive Replacement: When a drive fails, the system signals the failure, and the faulty drive can be replaced with a new one.
    3. Rebuilding Process: After insertion, the RAID array begins rebuilding the new drive using redundant data from other drives, ensuring data consistency.
    RAID Levels That Support Hot-Swapping


    Hot-swapping is primarily supported in RAID configurations that include redundancy:
    1. RAID 1 (Mirroring) – Since data is duplicated across drives, the system remains operational if a failed drive is replaced.
    2. RAID 5 (Striping with Parity) – Uses distributed parity, allowing recovery when a single drive fails. Hot-swapping replaces the failed drive, and data is rebuilt from parity information.
    3. RAID 6 (Striping with Double Parity) – Provides fault tolerance for up to two failed drives, making hot-swapping highly effective.
    4. RAID 10 (RAID 1+0, Mirroring & Striping) – Combines mirroring and striping, allowing continued operation and recovery after replacing a failed drive.

    Note: RAID 0 does not support hot-swapping because it lacks redundancy.
