It purely depends on your requirement. For example, asp.net scripts only run on Windows Platform. And some .htaccess file oriented project run better on Linux platform.

Personally I would use Linux as the "default option" because of its widespread use, renowned stability, reliability and level of security and - why not mention - lower costs. However, some things are not available on the Linux platform. If your needs cannot be fully met by a Linux server, but they can be by a Windows server, then that's the time when Windows will definitely be the better choice.

Linux is one of the more popular OS, because it is so cheap to install and get up and running.
Windows is another popular OS for Web hosting providers because it has a lot of support. Both are common and readily available OS, and there are many good reasons for using both.

I also agree Linux web hosting is better than windows web hosting. i always prefer linux because it's easy to handle.

Windows web hosting is better than the Linux web hosting because one of the valuable benefits is that it will work with Microsoft Front Page, a fairly powerful web page creator where almost anyone can create a professional looking web page or an entire site without knowing any HTML.
