Top Mistakes to Avoid in Web Hosting

Yes, a web presence is important in the cut-throat competition of today.  So you hurry off to create your web site and find a web hosting service to establish just that.  But haste makes waste and being in too much of a hurry may result in web hosting mistakes that can negatively impact your business.

1.  Lack of Planning

Before you offer your services or products to the world through your website, you should be clear on what your business actually offers.  You should be able to clearly differentiate your services or products from those of your competitors.  You should also be clear on what you want your website to be and how big it would have to grow to cope up with an expanded market base.  It would be a gross mistake to promote yourself if you cannot cope with the demand.

2.  Inappropriate or Unprofessional Design

Before making your website available to people whom you want to be your customers, make sure that your design is up to par.  If it is an ecommerce store, then your website should look like one.  It should have content suited to what you are selling.  Furthermore, it should have clean, uncluttered lines so that people shopping on your site will find it easy to do so.  Your web site should also be convenient to your customers.  It should have readily apparent buttons that facilitate their transactions.  Furthermore, do not ask for unnecessary information that could lead to more delays.

3.  Choosing a Fly by Night Web Host

Before paying the web host, you should make sure that you are dealing with a legitimate company that can provide you with exactly the service stated in your contract.  You should do some research before entrusting your website to the web hosting service provider.

4.  Choosing a Slow Web Host or Server

Beware that you do not sacrifice speed to save a few bucks.  There is nothing more frustrating to a customer than being made to wait to make a simple online transaction. Remember, your customers are people who prefer doing things on line for its convenience and ease.  They will not appreciate spending more than the necessary amount of time required to make their purchase.

5.  Weak Domain Name

A web presence is no presence at all if people cannot even remember you after they have left your site.  Thus, you should give serious thought to what your domain name should be.  It should reflect the nature of your business yet it should be short enough to be easy to remember.  It is preferable to pay for web hosting so that you can have your own domain than lodge your site with a free web host and be relegated to a sub-domain.

6.  Lack of Reliable Customer Service.

You should ensure that you have a 24-hour hotline to your web host.  This could take the form of 24-hour manned telephone lines, email or instant messaging service.  Also make sure that these hotlines work so that you could rest easy in the knowledge that you are dealing with a legitimate web hosting company and that you will have available service when technical issues crop up.

7.  Too Much or Too Little Bandwidth

Make sure that you have chosen the web hosting service that can provide you with sufficient amount of bandwidth for your business.  Excessive bandwidth means you are paying for something you do not really need, while too little bandwidth means less than optimal performance of your site.

8.  Too Much or Too Little Space

You need to check if your web host can provide you sufficient space for your business’ data processing needs.  Again, too much space means a waste of resources while too little space means your site will not have the capability of helping your business.

9.  Lack of Security

Your web site should have the absolute best in terms of security.  Your business will not grow if your customers are not assured that giving their crucial information to you online will not be a mistake on their part.  You have to assure your clients that you have the best safeguards in place to prevent compromise of their information.
