Game Servers: The Faster Wins

In this day and age, play is no longer confined to calling your neighbors and playing tag or hide and seek in the local park.  With the increasing inclination to use the computer and the internet for everything, what children (and children at heart) now do is call their friends through the telephone or through the computer to ask them if they wanted to play online.

Now for those who did not easily grasp the concept of playing games online, playing online means interacting with other people through the net and playing strategy and role-playing games.  The universe of the net becomes the park, and the characters in the games represent the players themselves.

This option of playing online with friends, even anonymous friends known only through game user names, has taken the world by storm that a new and exciting market has opened up for enterprising individuals.  And it does not end here.  Since online gaming is projected to grow much, much more than its current level, the online gaming market is far from exhausted and still has much room for service providers.

The game designers and programmers aside, the most important service provider in online gaming is the game server operator.  This is the person or the company that operates a dedicated server with the requisite software application that lets online game enthusiasts play against each other in the web.  Online gaming has banished the need for physical contact among adversaries.  Now all the players need is a computer, internet connectivity, a gaming software, the game server operator, and the other players to start shooting terrorists in Counter-Strike or to become the terrorists themselves.

A game server is a necessary component in multi-player games.  It would be useless to play in the internet if you have no place to go where you could meet other people who wish to play the same game you do.  Thus, more and more web hosting companies who previously had mostly online businesses as clients began to offer dedicated game servers to online game businesses and serious online game enthusiasts.

Game servers have two general classes:  centralized servers and distributed model servers.  Centralized servers let thousands of players to join an online game at the same time.  The game information can be found in the central server for smooth play and operation.  Games are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a weeks.  All a participant needs to do is run his game software and he will be logged on to the game server.  Of course, as has already been mentioned, this requires internet connectivity to accomplish.

A distributed model game server, as the name implies, distributes the load generated by online gaming to several dedicated servers instead of just one.  Logic implies that this means faster processing times and what is technically called low latency or excellent ping time rates.  Simply put, ping time rate is the measure of how fast a player gets connected to the game server and how fast the game server responds to the players’ commands, messages and requests.

Obviously, players will want less response times and thus, game owners would want to choose a game server who operates faster.  Therefore, of the two broad types of game servers, the distributed model gains more favor.  And a game server who can provide this type of service and optimized internet connections will get the bigger vote.  And to ensure maximum chances of winning clients, game servers must also ensure top of the line security and optimal applications and configurations.
So if you want to join the fast-growing need for game servers, bear the above elements in mind and be on top.
