Domain Names Registration - Choosing a Domain Name

Domain name registration

Once you have decided to create your own web site either for personal or commercial use, you will need a name.  This name will signify your online presence and it is called a domain name.  A domain name is like your unique internet name.  But choosing your desired domain name is not an easy task.  You need to give full concentration to the task and incorporate every aspect of your business before settling on a domain name.  Your domain name imparts the first impression about your work, profile and everything else. So you must follow some guidelines in choosing a suitable domain name.

Things to remember before choosing a domain name

1)       The important question in deciding your domain name is what to include in it. Should it contain your brand name or the keywords? Well, this is difficult to decide because as per some internet guru, a domain name should represent the brand name like most of the best known corporate houses such as Microsoft, Dell, Wall Mart, etc.  But whether or not your brand name will help you improve your page rank remains to be seen.  On the other hand using your best keywords in your domain name will help you increase your page rank and make it easily searchable through search engines.  The decision is up to you.  You will ultimately have to decide on what is more important to you, your brand name, your search engine rank or both.

2)       Another considerable issue is the length of your domain name.  The popular assumption is that short names make the best names.  But of course, it is very difficult to find a short name related to your business because of the very likely chance that someone has already taken up the best short names in your business category.  But long names are not always as bad as one may think.  As long as the name is memorable, not prone to spelling errors and gives the best description of your products and services, you should consider going for it rather than choosing a non-ethical and non-descriptive short name.

3)       Another important issue to contend with is what your first level domain should be.  Should it be .COM, .ORG or .INFO?  The decision depends upon the content you are providing.  For commercial use .COM is the best.  If your site is for non-commercial purposes, you should go for .ORG.  And if it mainly contains informative materials about some topics then you need to have a .INFO domain name.

A domain name reflects your image, so you should choose it only after taking into account all the major factors of concern.  You should never use a lot of special characters in you domain.  Unnecessary hyphens and dashes make a domain name very confusing and difficult to remember.
