Data Center: A secure location for web hosting servers

A corporal structure that is intended to domicile an array of computers. Data centers can be private, serving a single webhostingcompany or, a public efficacy i.e. “co-located” serving a diversity of corporations.

It’s an institutionally supported competence providing convenient access to, manipulation of, and/or distribution of data sets for a wide community of users. It’s a facility of storing, upholding, and making available data sets for predictable use in ongoing and/or future activities.

A data center contains set of routers and switches that carry traffic between the servers and to the outside world. Network security elements are also usually deployed: firewalls, VPN gateways, Intrusion detection systems, etc.

Communications in data centers today are most often based on networks running the IP protocol suite. Data centers contain a set of routers and switches that transport traffic between the servers and to the outside world. Redundancy is sometimes provided by getting the network connections from multiple vendors.

Servers at the data center are commonly used for running the basic Internet and intranet services needed by internal users in the organization(i.e. webhosting provider): email servers, proxy servers, DNS servers, etc.

The central purpose of a data center is running the applications that handle the core business and operational data of the organization. Such systems may be proprietary and developed internally by the organization, or bought from enterprise software vendors. Such common applications are ERP and CRM systems.

Often these applications will be composed of multiple hosts, each running a single component. Common components of such applications are databases, file servers, application servers, and middleware.

As data is a crucial aspect of most organizational operations and hosting providers, organizations have a tendency to be very protective of their data. A data center must therefore maintain high standards for assuring the reliability and functionality of its hosted computer environment. This is depicted in its physical and logical layout.
