Calculating the Space You Need For Your Web Site

Space is very important to web hosts

Space is the biggest concern for every web hosting service provider because data ultimately has to be stored at their servers.  More space means more income as well because after a prescribed limit, every additional MB will bring them additional revenue.  Many web hosting service providers initially provide you limited web space, and thereafter, they start charging you more.  But deciding the space requirement is the main concern of hosting service seekers.  If you can estimate the space you require for hosting your site, you can better plan your investment.  You can exchange your excess space for other features like bandwidth, additional email IDs, etc.  But all these benefits are available only if you can calculate your space as accurately as possible.  Here are some tips and methods to determine the space you require for your site:

Calculating space is nothing more than measuring the total size of all of your files, which you are going to upload into your host server.  These files should contain all the files needed to display and download various stuff available at your web page like demo softwares, company logo files, images, etc.  Before learning how to measure the space, you must know the units used to count the space of files.

1.                    Bit: Bit is the smallest unit, it can be yes or no where 1 means yes and 0 means no.

2.                    Byte: One byte equals 8 bits.  This also depends upon your computer manufacturer.  But nowadays, most computers are based on ASCII coding, which is itself an 8-bit encoding system.  One byte can be used to show one letter of information like A, Z or T.

3.                    MB: 1024 bytes equals 1 KB, and 1024 KB equals 1 MB and so on.

The simplest method to determine the space needed is to right click the root folder and check the properties.  This will show you the total space needed for your files.

Planning your space well beforehand

The good web site plan always starts with designing smaller sized web pages.  Depending upon the expansion and response, the size can be increased later on.  If you are engaged with the graphic and multimedia industry, you must opt for a dedicated web hosting because of your high bandwidth requirements.  Space requirement is also much higher in web pages involving high-end graphics and animations. Requirement also depends on increased features like moving multimedia contents, flash animations, etc.

You may also opt for the use of the various free file hosting services like rapidshare.de, etc. to host your bigger files rather than using your own server for storing them.  These free services are often used to host files bigger than 100 MB.  These bigger files normally include multimedia files, PDF documents or software documenting.  Using the free file hosting service frees you of huge files.  The additional free space can then be utilized to speed up your server responses.
