Definition:
Partitioning of hardware by a host operating system that allows another operating system to run on it. Virtual Private Servers (VPS) technology allows you to share server costs with other users, but gives you total control over your own applications. Virtual Private Servers run as isolated processes within a Web Server, and provide root access in complete privacy with the ability for guaranteed bandwidth, CPU, and disk space.
Virtual Private Server is also known as VPS. You may think that it is a new concept but it is not a new. This is an OLD concept of dividing a huge physical device into many small parts and allowing more and more people access to it at reasonable price. VPS is just more that shared server and less that a dedicated servers. We can think it as a building, which is divided into different flats, and each flat is independent unit having its own drawing room, kitchen and its own lock and key.
Virtual Private Server is an environment of hosting which gives you your own machine. Each VPS is a secure, private and protected area that operates as an independent server. The VPS allows multiple clients to share the network connections and the expense of hardware without facing any low performance or the freedom to run any software they choose. Main benefit of sharing the connection is we can completely avoid the problem of maintaining it all. Each VPS has its own complete directory structure and set of dedicated applications. For example, web server, mail server etc. and each VPS can be rebooted without affecting any other VPS on the physical server.
Virtual Private Server (VPS) -- Under this model, Advance software has been used to create a virtual server that performs as if it were a full server dedicated to the exclusive use of each account. This behind the scenes sophistication results in a superior hosting solution that is simple to use while eliminating the disadvantages of the Shared approach. A few of the key advantages of the Virtual Private Server hosting environment are listed below:
* Insulation -- Each virtual private hosting server (VPS) is completely partitioned from one another. A crash or lock up on one VPS has no impact on other virtual servers.
* Performance -- Each VPS receives a specified allocation of CPU, memory, and disk. The environment allows for bursting within reasonable limits, but does not permit one VPS from dominating the physical server's resources. The result is that each VPS receives a guaranteed level of service.
* Security -- Each VPS behaves exactly like a dedicated server, allowing the full security scheme to be utilized with absolutely no commingling of data among virtual servers.
* Control -- Each VPS can be administered with total control of all settings using the powerful, yet easy to use control panel or via the command line.
Virtual Private Servers also known by distinct names such like VPS, VPS Server, VDS, virtual Dedicated Server or Virtual Shared Sever. Virtual Shared Server has same meaning that it, partitioning of dedicated server.
Advantage of Virtual Private Server (VDS)
1. We can setup the server in short time.
2. Highest consistency and more security.
3. We can access ROOT on our own virtual dedicated server.
4. We can install any software which we want.
5. Increase server use and maximize server utility.
6. Management of server becomes easier.
7. We can minimize support requirements.
8. Provide complete control on panels.
9. Create your own virtual disks for your server, including swap!
